Troy (4th Dan)

Troy originally started studying Seido Karate in Nelson in 1985, attaining his Shodan (first degree black belt in 1992). He spent periods training in Auckland and Japan before settling in Christchurch.

He spent 4 years as a fulltime professional instructor for both Children and Adults in Auckland, Nelson and Japan has now seen some of his original students go onto Black Belt and further.

He has trained, taught and competed overseas on several occasions (New York, England,Japan and Australia) and has twice lived and trained in Japan.

His International results include a Gold in the 2nd Dan Kata at the 1995 U.S Seido National Tournament, a Bronze in the Lightweight Contact sparring at the 1996 Seidojuku World Championships and a Silver in the open weight Black Belt Sparring – 1998 Seido All Japan Championships. He also held the NZ National light weight Contact title in 1994.

Troy’s approach to Karate is one of a strong base of traditional Karate discipline and etiquette supporting both traditional and modern training methodologies. He also believes it should be fun!

He hopes to share some of what he has learned and to provide opportunities for people to learn, challenge and grow through the regular practice of Martial Arts.

Although Seido Karate is not focused on training for competition Troy has personally found competing rewarding. His main interest is Karate but he also has an on-going interest in and has competed in Kickboxing, Judo/BJJ. One of the tenets of the Japanese Budo (Martial Ways) being Shoshin – 'beginners mind' - to always be learning.

Troy lives in Rolleston with his wife and young daughter and works as a Supply Chain Planner.
